Modernist Cut-Outs Poster — Henri Matisse
The eye first meets the stylized silhouette of a seated woman, cut into deep cobalt blue shapes against a cream background, with a small touch of ochre yellow.
1947, the Jazz portfolio helped spread Matisse's late cut-out technique, using stencilled pochoir plates derived from gouache-painted maquettes. Henri Matisse is the author of this image. In the final decade of his life he developed the gouache cut-outs, arranging painted paper into compositions that replaced drawn line with shaped color. Works such as The Snail from the early 1950s show how bold, simple shapes can be combined into a larger rhythmic whole.
