Nu Bleu II Cut-Outs Gouache Poster — Henri Matisse
The eye first rests on the reclining nude silhouette, rendered as terracotta cut shapes and ocre yellow on a wide beige field with a cream margin.
1952, Blue Nude II belongs to a series of four "Blue Nudes" made in spring 1952; these compositions were assembled from gouache-painted papers cut into organic shapes. Henri Matisse produced these works by cutting painted sheets and arranging them into simplified figural forms. The Centre Pompidou's entry records the anecdote that the silhouette might have been made in a single fluid scissors cut.
