Matisse Cut-Outs

Henri Matisse was 77 in 1947 when he published Jazz, his first book of cut-outs. Confined to bed by an operation that kept him from holding a brush, he invented another way of painting: paper gouached in advance, which he cut with scissors before composing directly on the wall. These Matisse posters bear witness to that final reinvention.

Seven last years of work, from which came the freest pieces of his entire career. La Gerbe, Polynesia the Sea, The Blue Nudes, The Sorrow of the King (1952), The Snail: Matisse remade painting without paint, at 80, with a pair of scissors.

Archival reproductions on fine art paper 275 gsm.
